FAQ: questions about dental implantology,
aesthetics, orthodontics...

Hours and first visit

Can I make an appointment online?

Yes, it is very easy. Indicate the day and time you prefer in our form, and in less than 24 hours we will contact you (48 hours if it is a weekend). If you want, you can indicate the reason for the consultation, as well as any other comment that you think is necessary.

How does the first visit work?

To offer you the best solution we need to know your particular case. Therefore, in the first visit we will review your medical history and perform an oral examination. In the event that you do not have x-rays (if you bring them, the first visit is free), we will do them during the same visit in order to obtain an accurate diagnosis.

If you have them, we recommend that you also bring the following documents:

X-rays done in the last six months.

Medical report on your general state of health.

List of medications, if you are undergoing treatment.

What are the visiting hours?

Visiting hours are as follows:

Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 19 p.m.

Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 19 a.m.

We will always try to assign you an appointment as soon as possible, and in case of pain or urgency we will try to schedule the visit for the same day.

I am afraid of the dentist, what can I do?

It is a much more common situation than it seems, both in children and adults. For this reason, we create a comfortable and trusting atmosphere, and we help you with relaxation techniques and conscious sedation. For example, you can use our 3D glasses to listen to music or watch videos during treatment, which isolates you from the environment and noise.

Implantology

what is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a titanium screw that acts as an artificial root. It is placed in the maxillary or mandibular bone, and is usually made of different titanium alloys. A cover or crown is placed on the implant, which is the visible part of the tooth. This may be screwed or cemented. As a protocol, we make screwed covers whenever possible. Only in cases of maximum aesthetics will we opt for the cemented crown if the result is benefited.

What advantages does an implant have?

Dental implants can be performed with immediate loading implantology, so you can enjoy your new teeth in 24 hours, and lead a normal life in one day. In addition, they are a long-term solution, since they last practically a lifetime, and at an aesthetic and functional level they function as if they were your natural teeth.

How is the intervention?

It is a simple process that is carried out in the same consultation of the dentist. Local anesthesia is applied, so discomfort is minimal. If the patient has anxiety, we can apply conscious sedation, so that they do not suffer any discomfort. All surgeries at the Ahoa clinic are performed in the operating room of its facilities.

It is very expensive?

The price is adapted according to each case and procedure. Keep in mind that it is a solution that can be for life, so it is much cheaper than traditional procedures, which require many more visits, and sometimes the result is less durable. In addition, we offer you customized financing and payment plans adapted to each person.

How long does the whole process take?

The intervention itself is carried out in a single day. In the same session, the implant and provisional prostheses are placed. In a few months, they are replaced by the definitive prostheses. In any case, with provisional prostheses you can lead a normal life without any problem.

What care do implants require? Will I be able to lead a normal life?

Implants require very basic care, which is essentially the same as that required by proper oral hygiene, such as proper brushing and the use of dental floss and interproximal brushes. Avoiding tobacco and other harmful substances such as alcohol will improve the long-term prognosis of treatment. Regular check-ups for cleaning will increase the chances of enjoying your implants with satisfaction for years to come. Other than that, you can lead a perfectly normal life.

Is it compatible with tobacco?

It is highly recommended that you avoid tobacco, as it can have a very negative effect even if there are no other risk factors. It can impair healing, reduce blood supply, lower defenses against bacteria, or affect the long-term health of the implant. The latter is widely evidenced by studies that indicate more chances of having implant infections when you are a smoker.

Could it be that the body rejects the implant?

At Ahoa, 98,4% of implants are successful. The virtual guided surgery procedure, together with the quality of the materials we use, such as Premium Nobel Biocare implants, ensure that the implants integrate correctly into the bone structure after placement. In cases where there is no positive result, it is usually due to infections, vascular deficiencies or alterations in the healing processes (closely linked to smokers), as well as situations of poor bone quality.

How long will the implant last?

The implants do not have an expiration date. There are patients who have been wearing the same prosthesis for more than fifty years. Advances in technology and materials allow us to offer results that were unthinkable a few years ago, both in terms of aesthetics, functionality and durability. Basic hygiene care and regular visits to your dentist will help you keep your implants for life.

Is the implantation process painful?

No. The discomfort associated with the procedure is minimal. We apply local anesthesia during the intervention, so that the patient does not notice any type of pain. In cases where the intervention generates a lot of anxiety, we can apply relaxation techniques and conscious sedation, so that the patient is totally relaxed and calm. In this way, during the surgery he will be asleep and will not have any notion of what is being done, and afterwards he will enjoy a vague memory of what has happened without having any bad memories associated with the treatment. This has been shown to generate positive reinforcement in our patients, who spontaneously reduce their anxiety rates in subsequent treatment visits.

Smile aesthetics and porcelain veneers

How can the aesthetics of the smile be improved in a simple and definitive way?

From the study and analysis of your smile, we will explain how to improve the shape, size and/or color of your teeth, always seeking the harmony of your new smile in relation to your face and features. And we will achieve it using ceramic veneers, microveneers and even contact lenses, without the need to cut the tooth and with the best ceramics available in the field of aesthetic dentistry.

How long does it take to perform the ceramic veneers treatment?

Usually two visits is enough. In the first visit we will prepare your teeth according to the planning made previously from photographs, a diagnostic wax-up and the computer simulation of your smile. In the second and last visit we will place the ceramic veneers, with which you will obtain the beautiful teeth that you have always wanted.

Is there a problem when filing the teeth to put the veneers?

Forget the classic covers! At the Ahoa dental clinic we turn the page to the aggressive carving of the teeth by practicing minimally invasive dentistry and, whenever the case allows it, we apply adhesive dentistry on enamel to rehabilitate your teeth using veneers. As it is an extremely conservative treatment, your teeth will not be weakened.

What approximate price can it have?

Between €2.000 and €6.000, depending on the needs and the number of teeth to be included in the smile improvement. Normally they are between 4 and 8 teeth, as a guide.

There is no standardized solution for beautiful, white teeth. While it is true that a minimum of 4 dental veneers are necessary to obtain a new and radiant smile, it is usually necessary to place between 6 and 8 dental veneers to achieve the best of smiles.

What care is necessary after veneer treatment?

Few and simple, but very important. You must follow the same daily hygiene and the same diet as with your natural teeth. Once the new dental veneers have been placed, we will make sure that you are well versed in oral hygiene techniques. And remember, don't do with your ceramic veneers what you wouldn't do with your natural teeth!

Dental prosthesis, full mouth rehabilitation

What does the total rehabilitation of a mouth mean?

Basically, it is about restoring the state of oral health, function and dental aesthetics that you may have lost for different reasons. We will do it by replacing missing teeth, recovering the size and lost shapes of your teeth... In short, everything you need to improve the function of your mouth, chewing food and so that you once again project a beautiful and pleasant smile.

Can it be done even if there are few teeth left and they are worn?

If you are aware of the deterioration of your mouth, you doubt if your situation is irreversible and you do not know how to remedy it..., stop suffering and take action, because there is always a possible solution. At the Ahoa dental clinic we like challenges and we want to make your case our new challenge.

Is it better to use the teeth or is it better to remove them and put dental implants?

Unfortunately, there is no universal answer for all cases. That is why at the Ahoa dental clinic, and after a detailed study of your case, we will present you with the treatment options that best solve your oral problem, always with the premise that we prefer healthy teeth to the best of implants.

Is it a treatment that will last a lifetime?

Neither the most expensive car, nor the state-of-the-art refrigerator, nor the prosthetic rehabilitation designed by the best dental specialists are for life. We are aware of this, and for this reason at the Ahoa dental clinic we work with the best materials and apply the most advanced techniques, to increase the average life of our dental prostheses as much as possible, from a simple ceramic crown to a complete prosthetic rehabilitation.

What care should I have once the treatment is finished?

Few and simple, but very important. You must treat your teeth to a daily dental hygiene routine, as we will explain to you at the end of the treatment, and we will establish regular check-up visits (once or twice a year). It is very simple.

Endodontics (infection and/or nerve pain)

Is it necessary to treat the nerve in a tooth with cavities even if it does not hurt?

It is not always indicated. Sometimes teeth with cavities don't hurt. If the decay reaches the nerve, then pain does occur. Other times, cleaning the caries reaches the nerve, in these cases it is necessary to do root canal treatment.

Why can a root canal tooth continue to hurt?

It is a very common question: if my nerve has been killed, how can it hurt? The teeth are surrounded by tissues that are still alive, and by killing the nerve it becomes like a wound that has to heal. Recovery time is different. Sometimes it may happen that a conduit is not found. Another cause can be a fissure, and fissures do not heal, although killing the nerve reduces discomfort.

What options do we have to cure it if it continues to bother after the root canal?

The first option is always retreatment: Re-clean the fill from the roots, disinfect, re-fill and wait. The next option, if an infection does not heal, is to do periapical surgery. It is a treatment to clean the infection directly at the roots of the tooth.

The infection of a tooth is not cured with antibiotics?

No. The antibiotic cures the most acute phase of the infection, but the cause of the infection must be eliminated. It may be because the caries has reached the nerve and has become infected, because the treatment has been reinfected, because of a root that has not been properly cleaned or because of a poorly sealed filling.

What risk exists in endodontic molars if a cover or crown is not placed?

Endodontic pieces are teeth that are weaker; They are "as dehydrated". If at any time we chew something very hard, or use it more frequently than the others, they are pieces that are more susceptible to fracture. It is best to cover them with a cover.

Cavities and fillings

Does a tooth with cavities always hurt?

No. Oral sensitivity in each person is different. There are people who have sensitivity with very small cavities, and there are people who never have any pain until the cavities are very large.

How do we know that the tooth has a cavity?

Caries are diagnosed at a check-up. The most common way is through x-rays, such as an orthopantomography to have an overview, and with intraoral x-rays to determine the cavities between the teeth, roots...

Are white fillings for life?

No material is for life. If you maintain correct hygiene, go to check-ups and do the recommended hygiene, they will last longer, but they can always suffer a fracture. Also, just because you get a filling doesn't mean that this tooth can't get a cavity again.

If my tooth hurts a lot after doing a filling, what could be the problem?

The filling is necessary because we remove the caries and we have to cover the hole, but sometimes the caries is very large and the nerve becomes inflamed. The swelling may be temporary and the pain goes away. Other times the pain persists and you have to kill the nerve.

If I have food between the filling and the tooth, what can be done?

Sometimes it is necessary to repeat the reconstruction to adapt the union of the teeth. However, sometimes it is necessary to make a crown or cap to rebuild the contact point.

Bleeding gums

Why can a mouth cleaning hurt?

Dental hygiene can bother because of the gums, and especially if there is gingival recession present. If pain appears during the process, the intensity of the ultrasonic motor can be lowered and anesthesia can even be administered.

Is tooth sensitivity related to a gum problem?

One of the causes of dental sensitivity can be the exposure of the root dentin due to gingival recession, that is, a small part of the root is left unprotected. The pain appears when an external stimulus (temperature changes, brushing...) reaches the root. Tooth sensitivity may also appear due to inflammation of the gum, since it "detaches" from the tooth.

Where does bleeding gums come from?

The gums bleed due to a poor brushing technique, which causes the accumulation of bacterial plaque, and due to the presence of tartar, which causes a reddish color and swelling of the gums. This picture usually also produces bad breath.

How is gum problem treated?

If we have gingivitis, that is, reversible inflammation of the gums, we can treat it with a good brushing technique and professional hygiene.

If, on the other hand, we suffer from periodontitis (initial, moderate or advanced) with or without movement of any of the teeth, we should consult a specialist to find the origin of the disease and treat it according to need: from improving the brushing technique and performing scrapings to the need to do a microbiological culture to find out which bacteria are causing periodontitis.

Is gum disease curable forever?

Gum disease, gingivitis (reversible inflammation) is cured as long as it is controlled with good brushing. Periodontitis, on the other hand, is not cured, but it can be prevented from reaching more advanced stages. What is certain is that there may be a state of gingival health, even with the presence of dental mobility. In any case, we will have strong gums only with good brushing and without external factors, such as tobacco.

Is the electronic cigarette better than the cigarette for the gums?

The use of electronic cigarettes at the level of general health is under discussion, since it is being shown that it is also harmful. The electronic cigarette also contains harmful substances, such as nicotine, organic acids, ethyl heptylate, citric acid... so it is considered that these components and the oral habits of a heavy smoker continue to be harmful to the gums.
