What is a dental curettage?
Dental scaling, commonly known as curettage, consists of a deep cleaning that includes scaling, smoothing and root polishing (of the dental roots).
Thus, it is a deep dental cleaning technique that is used to eliminate periodontal pockets below the gum line, where tartar accumulates. Periodontal pockets are spaces that remain below the gums due to the loss of the supporting bone of the teeth. This loss is produced by the inflammatory-infectious process of periodontitis.
When is it necessary?
- Chronic gingivitis, if due to accumulation of subgingival tartar
- Chronic periodontitis
- On the recommendation of your dentist
How It Works
- Local anesthesia is applied to treat periodontal pockets without discomfort or pain.
- The dentist cleans the area thoroughly, until the tartar and bacteria are completely removed.
- The root of the tooth is smoothed.
Curettage can be done in one, two, three or four sessions, treating the mouth in quadrants, depending on the amount of tartar accumulated and the time since the last cleaning.
For curettage to be effective…
We must correctly identify these pockets through the periodontogram, a periodontal probing test.
Care after curettage
- For 5-6 days after curettage, follow a soft diet.
- Brush your teeth with a soft brush.
- A slight bleeding is normal when brushing during the following 24 hours.
- If you have discomfort, you can take ibuprofen.
If some tooth sensitivity arises, specific products can be applied and you should consult a professional.
