What is a dental curettage?

Dental scaling, commonly known as curettage, consists of a deep cleaning that includes scaling, smoothing and polishing of the radicular (tooth roots).

Thus, it is a deep tooth cleaning technique used to remove periodontal pockets below the gum line, where tartar accumulates. Periodontal pockets are spaces that remain under the gums due to the loss of the bone that supports the teeth. This loss is caused by the inflammatory-infectious process of peridontitis.

When is it necessary?

  • Chronic gingivitis, if due to subgingival tartar accumulation
  • Chronic periodontitis
  • On the recommendation of your dentist

How does it work?

  • Local anesthesia is applied to treat periodontal pockets without discomfort or pain.
  • The dentist cleans the area thoroughly, until tartar and bacteria are completely removed.
  • The root of the tooth is smoothed.

Curettage can be done in one, two, three or four sessions, treating the mouth in quadrants, depending on the amount of tartar accumulated and the time since the last cleaning.

For curettage to be effective…

We must correctly identify these pockets by means of the periodontogram, a periodontal probing test.

Care after curettage

  • For 5-6 days after curettage, follow a soft diet.
  • Brush your teeth with a soft brush.
  • It is normal to have a slight bleeding when brushing during the following 24 hours.
  • If you have discomfort, you can take ibuprofen.

If some dental sensitivity arises, specific products can be applied and you should consult a professional.

How is it different from a normal dental cleaning?
