Discover the storyConscious Sedation Surgery
Conscious sedation surgery is a medical procedure in which a combination of sedative drugs and local anesthesia is administered to ensure that the patient is relaxed and pain-free during the procedure, without reaching a state of total unconsciousness.
Unlike general anesthesia, in conscious sedation the patient remains awake, although in a state of deep relaxation. He/she can respond to simple stimuli and commands, but without experiencing anxiety or remembering the procedure vividly.

Conscious sedation is a technique used in dentistry to help patients relax during dental procedures. It allows the patient to be in a state of calm and tranquility, while remaining conscious and able to respond to the specialist’s instructions.
Yes, conscious sedation is safe when administered by a specialized medical anesthesiologist. Prior to sedation, Dr. Helena Serrano will evaluate the patient’s overall health and medical history to determine the best sedation option and minimize any risks.
Conscious sedation is appropriate for patients who:
-Have dental anxiety or fear.
-Need long or complex surgical procedures.
-Have a low tolerance to pain.
-Have a strong gag reflex response.
-Have difficulty remaining still in the dental chair.
During conscious sedation, patients feel relaxed and calm. They may feel slightly drowsy and fall asleep, and in some cases, not remember details of the procedure. However, they remain awake and can communicate with the dentist. The patient has the sensation of having spent little time in the dental chair, and the postoperative period, in the case of long surgeries, is much better due to the medication dosed intravenously during the intervention.
The dentist will provide specific instructions, which may include:
-Do not eat or drink anything for a period of time before the procedure, between 6-8 hours.
-Inform the dentist of all medications you are taking.
-Arrange for someone to accompany you home after the procedure.
Side effects are generally minimal, but may include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea or headache. These effects are usually temporary and disappear shortly after the procedure, between 24-48 h. later.
