A sinus lift is a surgical procedure aimed at increasing the amount of bone in the back of the jaw, where the maxillary sinuses are located.
During surgery, the Schneider’s membrane, which lines the maxillary sinus, is carefully lifted and the space created is filled with a bone graft material. This creates a solid and sufficient base for the subsequent placement of dental implants.

Sinus lift is a surgical procedure that creates enough bone in the back of the upper jaw to allow for the placement of dental implants. It is performed by lifting the lining of the maxillary sinus and filling the space with bone graft material.

It is needed when there is an insufficient amount of bone in the back of the jaw due to bone loss. This procedure allows dental implants to be placed securely and stably.

The procedure is performed through an incision in the gum to access the maxillary sinus area. The sinus lining is elevated and a bone graft is placed in the space created. The graft integrates with the existing bone over a period of 4 to 9 months.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and/or sedation to minimize any discomfort during surgery. After the operation, it is normal to experience some swelling and pain, which can be controlled with conventional analgesics. Sedation also allows intravenous medication to be incorporated so that postoperative swelling and pain is greatly minimized.

Potential risks include infection, inflammation, pain and, rarely, displacement of the bone graft. These risks are uncommon and can be effectively managed with proper care and postoperative instructions.

After maxillary sinus lift, it is necessary to wait 4 to 9 months to allow the bone graft to integrate properly with the existing bone before placing dental implants. Occasionally, if the clinical situation permits, the dental implant can be placed at the same time as the bone graft placement, reducing the number of procedures and the total treatment time.
