Interview with Dr. Sergi Miralles: “The patient can now decide what his smile will be like”.

Dr. Sergi Miralles, specialist in Aesthetics and Oral Rehabilitation at the Ahoa Clinic and member of the international Digital Smile Design team, has implemented this new concept in dental aesthetics in Barcelona.

What exactly is the Digital Smile Design concept?

Digital Smile Design is digital technology applied to esthetic dentistry. It is a new work protocol that allows us to evaluate each case in more detail, diagnose more accurately and obtain a more predictable final result. To do this, we use a combination of digital photographs, videos and specific measurements.

This digital studio is quite new in Barcelona, and even at a national level. How did you get to know it?

I always try to be up to date, as there is spectacular research and advances being made internationally in the field of esthetic dentistry. In this case, I became certified as a “Digital Smile Design Team Member” after participating in the course given by Dr. Christian Coachman and Mr. Livio Yoshinaga in Tel Aviv (Israel).

Every day more and more people are concerned about improving the appearance of their smile. Is dental esthetics becoming more and more important in our lives?

In today’s society, aesthetics is important in both personal and professional relationships. Not only for how we are seen, but for how we feel about ourselves. Appearance, such as having a beautiful smile, is directly related to well-being, personal security and professional success. That’s why cosmetic dental treatments are increasingly in demand.

How does the Digital Smile Design system benefit the patient?

In the first place, and what is an abysmal difference with other protocols, is that the patient not only can see the final result before the treatment, but actively participates in its design, is co-author of his own smile. Thus, the smile is fully integrated into their physical appearance, responds to their expectations and psychology.

Does this process seem complex, does it lengthen the treatment time?

No, on the contrary: it facilitates and accelerates it. As the treatment has already been virtually planned, and with a very high precision, we can carry it out in only two visits. In the first visit we begin to prepare the teeth, and after seven days we proceed to their placement.

Can the DSD concept be applied to any patient and case?

No doubt about it! Anyone who wants to improve any aspect of their smile can opt for this digital study. The naturalness of a smile does not happen accidentally, we can modify the position of the gum to improve the proportions and dental symmetries, or get a tooth color with which the patient feels comfortable.

In addition, we can apply the result of this study to any implant surgery with immediate loading, since the planning of this protocol is extremely precise and the esthetic results are very predictable.

Simply that the person asks himself a question: do I smile without any problem, or am I one of those who hides his smile?
