1. What is teeth whitening?
The whitening
dental is a dental treatment that manages to improve the tone
of the teeth. With the passage of time and because of certain habits
such as smoking or regular consumption of tea, wine or coffee, our teeth can
acquire a very unsightly yellowish tone.
2. How does the whitening process work?
First of all, the dentist checks the state of health
of the mouth, teeth and gums. Normally a previous oral cleaning
will be advised to remove tartar and dental plaque. This cleaning will also
remove some of the stains that discolor the surface of the enamel,
beginning to see a whiter shade of teeth. Then, we decide how many
tones we want to lower the color, and we apply the treatment. Afterwards,
we provide the patient with advice on how to preserve and extend the effect of teeth whitening to the maximum
.
Regarding the treatment, there are different methods. At
Clinica Ahoa we use hydrogen peroxide at different concentrations
for our teeth whitening treatments. This product abrasions in a controlled manner
the first micro layers of enamel. During the treatment
we protect the oral mucous membranes and gums to avoid irritation. To
reduce tooth sensitivity as much as possible, after treatment we apply fluoride
locally in the form of an adhesive gel for 3 minutes to remineralize the enamel.
In this way, we strengthen it and greatly reduce sensitivity
afterwards.
3. Is whitening effective on any type of
stain?
This treatment is effective in most cases
of loss of the natural color of the teeth, but not in all. For example, it is
effective in cases of darkening due to the passage of time, consumption of
substances such as tea, coffee, wine, spices …, or poor hygiene habits
bucodental.
However, if during the development of the teeth
we have taken any medication such as tetracyclines that have darkened them,
the color is already intrinsic to the tooth, it cannot be changed with a whitening
dental -although there are other treatments, such as veneers or porcelain microfaces
, which are effective in these cases-.
It should also be noted that whitening will not
be effective on implants, dental crowns or veneers.
4. How long does the effect of teeth whitening last?
Whitening is reversible, that is to say, after approximately six to nine months
we will have a similar tone
to the initial one. If we want to reduce it again, after this time we will have to
perform the treatment again. However, the more times we perform the
whitening over the years, the easier it will be to maintain and perpetuate in
time the tone achieved. In this case, the treatment can be performed at
at home. The custom-made positioners are manufactured at the clinic and
provides the whitening product to the patient to be applied at home 4 hours a day for 14 days at
.
There are some recommendations to take care of the result and that
lasts as long as possible, such as not smoking and a white diet for
two weeks, and avoid consuming foods with dyes that can stain or
darken the teeth, such as coffee, red wine or Coca-Cola.
5. Can whitening damage my teeth?
This treatment is safe, provided it is performed
by a professional. During whitening, substances are used that
abrasion of the first enamel microlayers in a controlled manner, so
be careful with the concentrations.
In addition, the oral mucous membranes and gums should be protected to avoid irritation and reduce sensitivity
.
However, if we go to a professional, this
treatment is safe and will not affect the overall health of our mouth.
6. How can I make the whitening effect last longer
?
- For
two weeks after whitening, follow a white diet: water,
white yogurt, white cheeses, vegetable drinks, milk, chicken, fish
white, endive, white cabbage, rice, bananas, pasta without color… The
dentist will give you a complete list of foods recommended in a white diet
.
- Avoid,
as a general rule, consuming foods that can stain or darken the
teeth: coffee, red wine, Coca-Cola, tea, soy sauce, blueberries,
spices such as curry, saffron or paprika…
- Avoid
smoking. Smoking not only negatively affects the color of your
teeth, but also has detrimental effects on your overall health.
- Consult
your dentist about the most suitable toothbrush and toothpaste
for your particular mouth. Proper oral hygiene is essential
to keep your mouth healthy and in perfect condition.
7. Can I have my teeth whitened at home?
Home treatments that promise you “miracle” whitening
are not at all recommended, and can also put your dental health at risk
. Many of these products, natural or not, contain
agents that damage tooth enamel, such as lemon acid, and
cause stains that are difficult to remove. On other occasions, they have no effect at all
, so the investment of time and money is wasted.
However, your dentist can provide you with
controlled whitening treatments to complement the treatment at
the clinic. But they should always be done under medical indication and
following the instructions given to you.
8. Is teeth whitening painful?
Not at all. It does not have to involve any pain or discomfort
. The treatment is carried out on the outer microlayers of the enamel
dental, and during the treatment the mucous membranes and gums are protected. In some cases it can
generate dental sensitivity, which will have to be controlled and will disappear in a few
days if the professional advice is followed.
9. Can I have whitening if I have gum problems
?
Before the treatment, the dentist must evaluate the state
of general health of your mouth, to see if it is advisable to perform it. If you have gum problems
, you will probably have to solve or control the
problem before you can have a whitening, to prevent it from becoming
complicated.
10. Can I have whitening if I have cavities?
As we have already indicated, before whitening the
dentist must evaluate the general health of your mouth, to see if it is
advisable to perform it. It is not recommended to perform this treatment if there are cavities.
First we must treat these, and then, if there is no other contraindication
, we can perform the whitening.
11. Can I have whitening if I smoke?
Smoking is not at all recommended for
our oral health, nor for our health in general. First of all,
tobacco causes our teeth to acquire a yellowish color
, which will reduce the effect and duration of whitening. But,
also damages the gums and can cause or aggravate gum problems,
among other consequences. For this reason, we recommend avoiding smoking, in any case
.
12. Can I have a whitening procedure if I have sensitivity
?
Bleaching itself can increase tooth sensitivity
dentalalthough in most cases they are mild discomfort that
improve with the use of toothpaste or desensitizing gels, and disappear in
a few days.
However, there are people who suffer from tooth sensitivity
continuously and / or more intense. First of all, the dentist should
find out the origin of this sensitivity, and from here see if the
treatment is advisable or not for the person.
13. Does whitening replace dental hygiene?
No, in any case. Dental hygiene not only helps to
preserve the natural color of our teeth, but also avoids the accumulation
of food debris and tartar, with
which also prevents caries, gum problems, etc. A correct dental hygiene
is essential for any person,
regardless of whether they have undergone or want to undergo
teeth whitening treatment.
